In True Barbie Fashion, Margot Robbie Dazzles at the Golden Globes

Margot Robbie proved she can bring plastic fantastic to life as she shimmied down the Golden Globes red carpet Sunday night in a voluminous hot pink gown. Channeling the ultimate glamazon doll, Robbie was pretty in pink in a strapless A-line Armani Privé confection with a bow bedecking the sweetheart bodice and a frothy tulle skirt. Consider it Barbiecore elevated to the highest level of haute.

“I just woke up and I thought maybe this would be appropriate tonight,” the ‘Barbie’ star cheekily told Variety correspondent Marc Malkin of her look for the evening. Robbie, who brought the iconic Mattel doll to life on the big screen this past July in Greta Gerwig’s smash hit ‘Barbie,’ has proven over this past year that she certainly has an affinity for the fuchsia fantasy of it all.

Whether in retro riffs featuring polka dots and bows that winked at Barbies of yore or in modern minimalist silhouettes straight off the shelves of a Malibu DreamhouseTM, Robbie has championed Barbie glam as her sartorial spirit animal throughout 2022’s global press tour for the film. Sunday evening was no exception, as the hot pink confection looked as though it was plucked straight from the 1977 Superstar SkipperTM doll’s closet. All the actress was missing to complete the transformation were Skipper’s signature purple sunglasses.

Nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Comedy/Musical for her titular role in ‘Barbie,’ Robbie took to Instagram after the ceremony to give her stylist Kate Young a shoutout for another showstopping Barbie creation. Earlier in the weekend, Robbie also turned heads in a metallic rose Valentino Haute Couture gown with a dramatic bow-bedecked back at the 29th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala, proving her affinity for glitzy glam fashion von’t be disappearing from red carpets anytime soon, especially after the wild success of ‘Barbie’ at the box office.

With its message that you can be anything, ‘Barbie’ resonated deeply over the past year not only at theaters but across fashion and beauty. The film ushered in a full-fledged phenomenon dubbed ‘Barbiecore’ that shows no signs of dying down as 2023 gets underway. On the Golden Globes red carpet, the sustainable Vera Wang gown donned by ‘Barbie’ star America Ferrera featured a bustier bodice and voluminous tulle skirt in a vibrant Barbie pink hue. ‘Abbot Elementary’ star Sheryl Lee Ralph looked like a queen Barbie come to life in a hot pink gown with a cape sleeve that pooled at her feet. The men also embraced shades of pink, from dynamic duo Billy Porter and Jeremy Pope’s fuchsia feathered train and pink double-breasted tux to film producer Jason Blum’s Pepto-pink suit.

Though the actress joked that after an endless parade of pink pandemonium, she chucked her entire pink wardrobe at the end of ‘Barbie’s’ press tour, it’s clear from her sartorial showstoppers as of late that she still has an affinity for Barbie fashion magic off-screen. While she may be temporarily hanging up Skipper’s signature halter top to take on roles like Ken Miles’ fiery wife Mollie in the upcoming racing drama ‘Ferrari,’ her Golden Globes look proves that when it comes to dazzling as a dynamite doll on the red carpet, Margot Robbie will always think pink.
