Anne Hathaway Steps into Her Fashion Groove
Oscar-winner Anne Hathaway has come a long way since her Princess Diaries days. The actress, who turns 40 next month, has gracefully grown into her sense of style over the years with the help of her “great love” and stylist Erin Walsh. In a new interview with PORTER magazine, Hathaway opens up about finding her fashion footing and learning to balance her private life with being in the public eye.
Photographed by Cass Bird and styled by Helen Broadfoot, Hathaway dazzles in the editorial wearing designs by Brandon Maxwell, Christopher John Rogers, and Giambattista Valli among others. She credits Walsh with helping unlock her fashion potential. “Erin knows my body so well and knows how to accentuate the parts that make me feel most confident,” Hathaway shares. The duo have developed an effortless rapport. “We just have a lot of fun together.”
Hathaway also reveals she’s learned not to worry so much about perception and to instead focus on staying true to herself. “I used to be so worried about coming off as too ambitious that I would underplay my drive,” she admits. “Now I’m completely unapologetic about my goals. I’ve realized you can be ambitious and still be grateful.”
The actress says she’s felt even more settled since marrying businessman Adam Shulman in 2012. The couple shares two children and splits time between Los Angeles and New York. Hathaway emphasizes the importance of carving out private family time amidst her busy career. “My family is my anchor. As long as I’m fulfilled there, I’m able to better manage the more stressful parts of the job.”
Next up, Hathaway is getting gritty in the big screen adaptation of Ottessa Moshfegh’s bestselling novel Eileen, playing the disturbed title character opposite Thomasin McKenzie. She calls the thriller set in 1960s New England “a real actor’s dream.” The demanding role required her to transform both mentally and physically. “I lost weight and dyed my hair red. I tried to reshape the way I moved and held myself to become this miserable woman.”
Hathaway says the early reactions to Eileen have her optimistic. “I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. Now I just hope people will go see it.” She’s also set to star opposite Jeremy Strong in James Gray’s Armageddon Time later this year.
With major projects lined up, it’s clear Hathaway’s career is still ascending. She laughs recalling the naysayers who claimed she’d flame out after her 2013 Oscars win. “There was this misguided idea that it would all fall off a cliff for me when I turned 35. I’m 37 now and I think I’ve proven them wrong.”
The in-demand actress reveals she has no plans to slow down anytime soon. “My dreams really haven’t changed much from when I was starting out. I still want to do meaningful work that inspires people. I’m just more confident now going after it.” It seems we can expect even greater things ahead from Anne Hathaway.
