Gucci’s Creative Renaissance Continues with Glamorous New Eveningwear
Gucci creative director Sabato De Sarno has been pulling back the curtain on his new minimalist vision for the storied Italian house since debuting his first collection during Milan Fashion Week last month. The debut offered a radically different perspective from previous creative head Alessandro Michele, swapping eccentricity for refined simplicity. De Sarno’s subsequent ad campaigns starring the likes of Kendall Jenner and Bad Bunny in signature monogram trench coats and logo knits signaled a return to Gucci’s roots. Last night at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) Art + Film Gala, De Sarno unveiled the next phase of his evolution: a dazzling new eveningwear collection called “Ancora Notte” (“Night Again”).
Co-chaired by Eva Chow and Leonardo DiCaprio, the gala honored artist Judy Baca and filmmaker David Fincher. With Gucci as lead sponsor, it served as the ideal stage for De Sarno’s glamorous vision. Channeling a cool 90’s spirit, the 12-piece gown collection featured sultry cutouts, micro-shorts peeking through slits, and lace inserts. Emerging models like Camilla Orner and Agel Akol, who walked in De Sarno’s runway debut, glided down the red carpet in bias-cut slips and embellished sheaths alongside veterans Mariacarla Boscono and Vittoria Ceretti.
“Ancora Notte is anchored to reality and made of joy and humanity,” De Sarno said, calling the capsule an organic extension of his ready-to-wear collection. Indeed, the sleek silhouettes and skin-baring details project a radically different mood for the heritage brand – one of youthful sensuality and modern glamour. Thigh-high slits and lingerie-inspired bodices make a dramatically sexy statement compared to Gucci’s recent eccentric phase.
De Sarno also unveiled new men’s formalwear modeled by A$AP Rocky, Elliot Page, and Pedro Pascal. Tailored suits with sharp silhouettes and signature double-G buttons continue the return to Gucci’s archenal of codes. Between the revealing women’s gowns and razor-sharp men’s suiting, De Sarno seems intent on introducing a provocative new air of sophistication.
Of course, the future of Hollywood red carpets remains uncertain due to the ongoing writer’s strike. But De Sarno has already proven shrewd business instincts along with impeccable design chops. In just over a month since unveiling his inaugural collection, he has orchestrated a multipronged campaign spanning ad campaigns, star-powered events and now formalwear that masterfully spotlights Gucci’s new era. If his smash debut is any indication, Sabato De Sarno is set to lead a thrilling creative renaissance at the iconic fashion house.
