A Second Loss for the All That Family: Christy Knowings Dies at 46

The world of late-’90s sketch comedy is mourning one of its own. Christy Knowings, a standout alum of Nickelodeon’s All That, has died at age 46, TMZ reported Thursday, citing an unnamed family member.

According to the outlet, Knowings suffered an asthma attack and was hospitalized on Friday, Aug. 7, at a Los Angeles-area hospital. Her condition remained critical, and she was placed on life support. Her family made the wrenching decision to remove her from life support on Tuesday, Aug. 11, and she passed away that night.

Tributes began pouring in almost immediately, none more poignant than the one from her former castmate Kenan Thompson. The Saturday Night Live veteran, 48, took to Instagram to share his grief with characteristic warmth: “Man this one hit hard!!! Rest well Christy!!! Never could have imagined this day!! Sending so much love to her family!! She was a real one and one of the funniest people out here!!! Gonna miss you buddy!!!”

Knowings’s path to television history began in 1997, when she appeared in And Now This, Rosie O’Donnell’s sketch-comedy special for Nickelodeon — a launchpad that led directly to her joining the All That cast that same year. Over three seasons, she brought a gallery of characters to life, most memorably Penny Lane and Jessica in the fan-favorite recurring sketch “Whateverrr!!!,” performed alongside Amanda Bynes. She remained with the series through Season 6.

Beyond All That, Knowings crossed into another corner of children’s television history, appearing in three episodes of Sesame Street alongside her real-life twin brother, Chris Knowings — a full-circle moment for a performer whose career was defined by joy and collaboration. In 2020, she stepped into a different creative lane entirely, releasing the folk single “To the World.”

Knowings’s death marks the second loss among the All That family this year. In January, former cast member Kianna Underwood was killed in a hit-and-run collision in Brooklyn — a tragedy that already cast a long shadow over the show’s tight-knit alumni community. News of Knowings’s passing has reopened that grief, drawing an outpouring of remembrance from former castmates and the generation of fans who grew up watching her.

All That remains a towering piece of television history in its own right. The series ran for ten seasons, from its 1994 premiere through its 2005 finale, and helped launch the careers of Amanda Bynes, Kel Mitchell, Nick Cannon, and Thompson himself. Its cultural footprint extended well beyond its own run, spawning beloved spinoffs including Kenan & Kel, The Amanda Show, and The Nick Cannon Show — a legacy Knowings helped build from its earliest seasons.

As tributes continue to circulate, Knowings is being remembered not just for the characters she played, but for the warmth and humor she brought to a generation of Saturday-morning television — the kind of presence, as Thompson put it, that made her “a real one.”
