In a tragic case that has shocked and captivated the nation, Gareth Pursehouse, 45, has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the brutal 2020 murder of Hollywood sex therapist and former Playboy model Amie Harwick.

Harwick, just 38 years old at the time of her death, was a shining light in the Los Angeles therapist community, sought after for her expertise in sex therapy and her empowering message of confidence and self-love. A former fiancée of Drew Carey, Harwick had built a career helping others before her life was tragically cut short by her obsessed ex-boyfriend Pursehouse.

In the stylish, Mediterranean-style complex where Harwick resided, Pursehouse laid in wait for hours before viciously attacking her and throwing her from her third-floor balcony. The details that emerged were truly chilling.

Pursehouse and Harwick had previously dated for 18 months before she ended the relationship in 2012 and filed a restraining order over his continued harassment. The order had expired in 2015, but prosecutors argued that Pursehouse remained obsessed with Harwick, unable to move on from their relationship and feeling entitled to her affection.

On the morning of February 15, 2020, the 45-year-old broke into Harwick’s home and brutally beat her before throwing her over the balcony. Her lifeless body was found sprawled on the pavement outside. She was rushed to the hospital but later died from her extensive injuries in a final tragic twist to the horrifying attack.

The sentencing this week provides some small comfort – Pursehouse will now serve the rest of his natural life locked behind bars, though it still seems inadequate punishment for his horrific crime.

“Justice was served,” the Los Angeles District Attorney said in a statement after the September conviction. Harwick’s loved ones have endured unspeakable grief and trauma throughout the lengthy court proceedings.

Harwick was a guiding light for so many, and her legacy will live on through those she helped. With her captivating smile and vivacious approach to life, she made the world a little brighter. The fashion and lifestyle communities mourn her loss while celebrating the meaningful work she did.

Her tragic case sheds further light on the sinister and persistent threat of domestic violence against women. May Harwick’s bright spirit carry on, inspiring future generations of women. As she so often told her clients: the most beautiful makeup look begins with self-confidence and self-love. Now her fight for women’s empowerment and autonomy must carry on in her absence.
