Maisie Williams Turns Heads in Striking Christian Dior-Inspired Look at The New Look Premiere
Last night at The New Look premiere in Los Angeles, Maisie Williams captivated the red carpet in a show-stopping monochromatic ensemble that paid homage to the series’ inspiration, Christian Dior. Channeling the iconic French designer’s signature 1947 “New Look” silhouette with its nipped waist and full, voluminous skirt, the 26-year-old Game of Thrones alum put a modern spin on the classic style.
Williams arrived in a structured leather dress with an exaggerated shawl effect that draped dramatically across her shoulders and cinched at the waist before flowing out into a midi-length A-line skirt. The bold black leather lent a sleek, contemporary edge to the otherwise traditional shape. She completed the monochrome moment with black tights, sheer pleated gloves, and pointed-toe velvet heels. A black leather beret perched atop her blonde pixie cut added a final touch of Parisian je ne sais quoi.
By honoring Dior’s legendary contributions to shape and structure in such literal fashion, Williams announced herself as a budding style star and highlighted her role in the series as the designer’s younger sister, Catherine. Her pared-back beauty look, featuring a soft bronze eye, marsala lip, and diamond drop earrings, allowed the outfit itself to take center stage.
Williams was joined on the red carpet by her dapper co-stars, including Ben Mendelsohn, who plays Dior himself, and Juliette Binoche portraying rival designer Coco Chanel. Binoche also channeled vintage glamour in a curve-hugging black maxi dress and wide-brimmed cartwheel hat. The elaborate headpiece obscured her face, forcing all eyes to her hourglass figure.
Writer and director Todd A. Kessler sported a polished yet playful look comprising a navy suit, black bowler hat, and leather gloves. The hat lent Kessler a mysterious air, while Glenn Close opted for a more straightforward Dior interpretation — a trim black blazer with pleated midi skirt. Her leather gloves matched Williams’ own pair.
The red carpet reflected the series’ post-war Paris setting, with other male cast members including John Malkovich, Claes Bang, and Thomas Poitevin turning out in sharp tuxedos. But Williams reigned supreme; her contemporary take on Dior’s iconic silhouette announced the rising star as one to watch both onscreen and off in the coming award season.
The New Look chronicles the explosive rise of Dior and fellow groundbreaking designers Cristóbal Balenciaga, Pierre Balmain, and Coco Chanel in the years following World War II. It promises to provide insight into the eccentric creative visionaries who fundamentally shaped modern fashion as we know it. And if last night’s premiere is any indication, the drama, glamour, and larger-than-life personalities at its center will captivate audiences.
