Passion, Perseverance, and the Path to the Oscars: A Whittier College Alumni’s Inspiring Story
In the glittering world of Hollywood, where dreams are made and stars are born, a remarkable story unfolds. Emily Baeza, a 33-year-old Whittier College alum, has defied expectations and carved her path to success. Her journey from the hallowed halls of liberal arts to the prestigious ranks of the Academy Awards is a testament to the power of perseverance and passion.
Baeza’s road to acclaim began at Whittier College, where she tailored her studies to encompass journalism, creative writing, and environmental science. It was here that she honed her collaborative spirit and developed a deep appreciation for diverse perspectives. “A large part of my experience at Whittier revolved around collaboration and empathy,” she reminisces. These invaluable lessons would prove pivotal in her future endeavors.
After graduating in 2013, Baeza’s trajectory took an unexpected turn as she immersed herself in the world of nonprofits, working with City Year in Los Angeles and Boston. This experience not only expanded her marketing and filmmaking opportunities but also led her to pursue a master’s degree in civic media from Emerson College in Boston.
It was during her time in the industry that Baeza’s unique skill set truly shone. Her ability to seamlessly navigate multiple departments and maintain a birds-eye view of the intricate moving parts of a production proved invaluable. “Film is one of the most collaborative, team-based professions you could be a part of,” she explains. “It’s because I have that ability to see across many different departments that I feel like it really helps my work now.”
Baeza’s dedication to diversity and representation has been a driving force throughout her career. As a member of Women in Film & Video New England, she has actively championed opportunities for underrepresented voices both in front of and behind the camera. Her efforts have not gone unnoticed, as evidenced by her involvement in the critically acclaimed film “American Fiction.”
Set in Boston, this thought-provoking comedy-drama explores the complexities of race and representation in the media. With a diverse cast led by the talented Jeffrey Wright, a Best Actor nominee, “American Fiction” resonated with audiences and critics alike. Baeza’s role as the second assistant director allowed her to work closely with the cast, ensuring seamless logistics and creating an environment conducive to exceptional storytelling.
As the 96th Academy Awards approach, Baeza finds herself swept up in the whirlwind of excitement surrounding “American Fiction,” which has garnered an impressive five nominations, including Best Picture. “All of our phones were blowing up with notes of congrats to each other, reviving the text threads we used during filming,” she recalls with palpable joy.
In an industry often criticized for its lack of inclusivity, Baeza’s journey serves as a beacon of hope. Her advice to aspiring filmmakers and those seeking to switch careers is simple yet profound: “Set a clear intention or goal and don’t be afraid to speak it into existence.”
As the curtain rises on Hollywood’s biggest night, Emily Baeza stands as a shining example of the transformative power of determination and the boundless possibilities that await those who dare to dream.
