Nintendo’s Next Box Office Gamble: Zelda Film Casts Breakout British Duo for 2027 Release
In a move that’s sending shockwaves through both the gaming and entertainment worlds, Nintendo has unveiled the leading stars of its highly anticipated Legend of Zelda film adaptation, marking a pivotal moment in the convergence of digital and cinematic storytelling. The announcement, delivered via X by legendary Nintendo game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, reveals that two exceptionally talented British actors will bring the beloved characters to life on the silver screen.
Bo Bragason, the 21-year-old powerhouse who captivated audiences in Disney+’s period drama Renegade Nell, has been chosen to embody Princess Zelda, the franchise’s iconic royal heroine. Known for her magnetic screen presence and versatility, Bragason has already demonstrated her range through compelling performances in BBC’s hard-hitting series Three Girls and The Jetty. Her foray into horror with Censor and Euros Lyn’s vampire comedy The Radleys showcases an actress unafraid to embrace complex, multifaceted roles – qualities that will undoubtedly serve her well in bringing depth to gaming’s most beloved princess.
Opposite her, 16-year-old Benjamin Evan Ainsworth will step into the green tunic of Link, the series’ courageous protagonist. Despite his youth, Ainsworth brings impressive credentials to the role, having lent his voice to the titular character in Robert Zemeckis’ live-action Pinocchio remake alongside Tom Hanks. His haunting performance in Netflix’s The Haunting of Bly Manor and appearances in Everything’s Going to Be Great and All Fun and Games opposite Sex Education‘s Asa Butterfield demonstrate a maturity beyond his years.

Under the direction of Wes Ball, the visionary filmmaker behind The Maze Runner trilogy and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, this marks the first theatrical adaptation of the legendary gaming franchise. The film represents a significant milestone, as previous attempts to translate Zelda to screen were limited to a 1989 animated television series. Ball’s proven ability to craft large-scale adventures makes him the perfect choice to helm this ambitious project.
The production, scheduled for theatrical release on May 7, 2027, comes with considerable industry weight behind it. Miyamoto himself serves as producer alongside Avi Arad, ensuring authentic representation of the source material. Sony Pictures is banking on replicating the phenomenal success of Universal’s Super Mario Bros. Movie, which became a box office juggernaut for Illumination Entertainment.
Originally slated for March 2027, the film’s release was strategically moved to May “for production reasons,” according to Miyamoto – a decision that demonstrates the studio’s commitment to delivering a polished, high-quality adaptation worthy of the franchise’s devoted fanbase.
This casting announcement signals Nintendo’s continued expansion into Hollywood, leveraging decades of beloved gaming narratives to create cinematic experiences that honor their interactive origins while appealing to broader audiences.
