Barrie Dies at 95: A Beloved Icon’s Stunning Legacy

Barbara Barrie, the Oscar-, Emmy- and Tony-nominated actress who lit up the original production of Company and charmed cinema audiences in Breaking Away, has died at 95. The luminous performer passed away Wednesday in Manhattan, closing a chapter of American performance that spanned more than six decades.

Her daughter confirmed the news to The New York Times and shared that Barrie’s death was medically assisted following a terminal cancer diagnosis. It was a final act of quiet agency from a woman who had long met life’s hardest moments with candour.

A Chicago Girl With Texas Roots

Born in Chicago on May 23, 1931, and raised in Texas, Barbara Barrie graduated from the University of Texas in 1952 with a degree in drama. She then set her sights on New York, a move she told the Akron Beacon Journal in 1963 was made only because of a man. Romance may have been the pretext, but the stage was her true destiny.

source: NBCUniversal via Getty Images

Broadway’s Radiant Leading Lady

Barrie made her Broadway debut in 1955 in The Wooden Dish, launching a theatrical career that moved effortlessly between Broadway and off-Broadway for more than 60 years. Her credits read like a syllabus of the great stage canon: The Crucible in 1958, both A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Taming of the Shrew across 1958 and 1959, and California Suite in 1976. She took her final bow in Significant Other, a fitting encore for an artist who never truly left the stage.

Yet it was Stephen Sondheim’s Company that secured her place in theatrical lore. As a member of the original 1970 Broadway cast, Barrie played Sarah, a performance that earned her a Tony nomination for best featured actress in a musical.

The Silver Screen Beckons

On film, Barrie made her debut in Giant in 1956. In 1964, she starred in One Potato, Two Potato, winning the best actress award at the Cannes Film Festival, a prize few American actresses of her era could claim.

Then came 1979 and Breaking Away, the beloved coming-of-age film nominated for five Academy Awards. Barrie’s tender, grounded performance earned her a best supporting actress nomination. She lost to Meryl Streep for Kramer vs. Kramer, though defeat has rarely arrived in more distinguished company. A year later, she appeared as Goldie Hawn’s mother in 1980’s Private Benjamin.

Television’s Most Trusted Face

Barbara Barrie was equally at home on the small screen. Her résumé reads like a tour of television’s golden eras: The Defenders, Naked City, The Twilight Zone, The Alfred Hitchcock Hour, Barney Miller and Suddenly Susan. She earned Emmy nominations for the television adaptation of Breaking Away and for her appearances on Law & Order and Law & Order: SVU, proof that her appeal crossed generations.

source: NBCUniversal via Getty Images

A Second Act of Courage

Away from the spotlight, Barrie demonstrated a different kind of strength. She wrote two books about her experience to reduce the stigma surrounding the illness: Second Act in 1997 and Don’t Die of Embarrassment in 1999. In 2014, she announced that she had been diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a degenerative lung disease, and again faced her health with grace.

A Legacy That Endures

Barrie is survived by her daughter, her son, Aaron Harnick, and three granddaughters. Barbara Barrie was the kind of performer audiences trusted instantly, whether in a Sondheim musical, a heartland drama or a primetime procedural.
