A Texas Legend Bows Out<\/h2>\n

There are bands, and then there is ZZ Top<\/a> \u2014 three men, one silhouette, an entire American mythology built on fuzzy guitars, sun-scorched boots, and a backbeat that never wavered. That backbeat belonged to Frank Beard, and this week, the world learned it had gone silent. Beard, the drummer whose steady, unshowy pulse anchored the Texas trio for more than fifty years, died Monday at his ranch outside Richmond, Texas, in hospice care. He was 77. A cause of death<\/a> has not been made public, though the Fort Bend County Medical Examiner’s office confirmed the passing, and the band’s publicist noted he had been receiving hospice care at the time.<\/p>\n

Ironically, Beard was the only member of ZZ Top without a beard \u2014 a sly, self-aware joke the band leaned into for decades. ZZ Top pulled out of its tour-opening date at the Hollywood Bowl on August 5th, with Gibbons attributing the cancellation at the time to vague “insurmountable obstacles.” Days later, reports surfaced that Beard’s health had been the real reason behind the abrupt scrapping of the Los Angeles show. The band went on to cancel additional stops in Sandy, Utah, and Colorado Springs, Colorado, before confirming it would carry on with a substitute drummer for the remainder of its dates.<\/p>\n

Hill died in 2021, making Beard the band’s second-longest-tenured member after Gibbons himself \u2014 a lineage of loyalty rare in an industry built on reinvention and turnover.<\/p>\n

The Frank Beard ZZ Top era on the road has officially closed, but the band’s commitments continue. ZZ Top had been deep into its sprawling Big One Tour, a run that spanned 34 U.S. dates in spring, a 21-stop European leg through June and July, and dozens more American shows stretching to October 9th, with additional performances planned across Mexico and South America in November.
