\u201cI wanted to see my friends and celebrate our nice show,\u201d Rosenthal explained, reflecting on why it took nearly three decades to pull together the reunion special. His desire was never for a cash-grab reboot, but for a genuine moment of connection. \u201cMany shows do reboots, and we\u2019ve never wanted to do that,\u201d he continued. \u201cWe felt like we couldn\u2019t honestly do one since some of the cast isn\u2019t with us anymore, and they were essential to the success of the show. Ray and I both believe that reboots are never as good as the original.\u201d<\/p>\n

For fans, the absence of several beloved cast members who have passed away over the years made a reboot feel impossible. Doris Roberts, who played the iconic Marie Barone, Peter Boyle as Frank Barone, and Sawyer Sweeten, who portrayed Ray and Debra\u2019s (Patricia Heaton) son, were key to the show\u2019s chemistry, and their absence would leave an irreplaceable void.
