In a solemn moment for the global film and arts community, the world bids farewell to Graham Greene, the indelible Canadian First Nations actor whose voice and presence shaped generations of storytelling. The 73-year-old titan passed peacefully of natural causes, his manager Gerry Jordan confirmed in a heartfelt statement to CBC News. \u201cIt is with deep sadness we announce the peaceful passing of award-winning legendary Canadian actor Graham Greene,\u201d he wrote \u2014 a phrase that only begins to encapsulate the breadth of Greene\u2019s towering career and profound cultural impact.<\/p>\n

A proud member of the Oneida Nation, part of the Six Nations Reserve in southern Ontario, Greene\u2019s work was far more than acting \u2014 it was advocacy, embodiment, and the reclamation of Indigenous narratives in Hollywood and beyond. His unforgettable portrayal of Kicking Bird, a Lakota medicine man in Kevin Costner\u2019s 1990 epic Dances With Wolves<\/em>, earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. It wasn\u2019t merely a performance \u2014 it was a cultural awakening on screen, an ode to Indigenous wisdom, dignity, and sovereignty.<\/p>\n

Greene\u2019s career was anything but conventional. Before the spotlight, he toiled as a steelworker, a civil technologist, and even a roadie for a rock band \u2014 a nomadic mosaic that eventually led him to the UK theatre scene in the 1970s. It was there that he honed his craft with the discipline and edge that would later define his screen work. \u201cThe discipline of theatre is what I recommend to all actors,\u201d he once told Playback<\/em> magazine in 2012. \u201cIt helps you build a character. When you get into film, you don\u2019t have that luxury.\u201d<\/p>\n

And build characters he did \u2014 from the commanding tribal officer Walter Crow Horse in Thunderheart<\/em> (1992) to Arlen Bitterbuck, the tragic death-row inmate in The Green Mile<\/em> (1999), Greene inhabited every role with soul, gravitas, and nuance. Whether matching wits in Die Hard With A Vengeance<\/em> (1995) or offering tender wisdom in The Twilight Saga: New Moon<\/em> (2009), Greene proved time and again that Indigenous actors were not to be sidelined or typecast \u2014 they were to be centered.<\/p>\n

His accolades mirror his artistry. In 2004, Greene received the prestigious Earle Grey Award for Lifetime Achievement, an honour that recognized not just his cinematic work, but his cultural legacy. In 2016, he was inducted into the Order of Canada, a national testament to his contributions not only to film, but to the country\u2019s evolving dialogue with its Indigenous roots.<\/p>\n

Beyond the screen, Greene credited his wife Hilary Blackmore as the compass of his life. Their partnership, he said, marked \u201cthe best time of my life,\u201d grounding him amid the whirlwind of Hollywood.<\/p>\n
